Hic sunt Leones!

Hic sunt Leones! presents twelve original compositions by Norwegian pianist and composer Håvard Wiik, written specifically for his long-standing trio with bassist Ole Morten Vågan and drummer Håkon Mjåset Johansen. Built on more than two decades of musical collaboration, the album explores the shifting boundaries between composition and improvisation, melodic clarity and rhythmic complexity, intimate interplay and collective intensity. Seven trio compositions are interspersed with five short, numbered solo piano pieces entitled “Uncharted,” creating a musical landscape that continually shifts between familiar structures and unexplored territory. The title, meaning “Here Be Lions,” refers to the markings on historical maps used to denote unknown lands. It aptly describes a trio that combines a deep understanding of jazz tradition with an ongoing commitment to experimentation and musical discovery. With its distinctive compositions, intricate rhythmic interplay and dynamic contrasts, Hic Sunt Leones is a compelling new statement from one of Norway's most individual piano trios.

“In just a little over four minutes they’ve quietly pulled the rug out from under you and then put it back.” — Bill Meyer, Magnet Magazine

“Most of the trio works reveal an impressive unity in how the music expands and contracts through collective improvisations.” — Peter Margasak, Nowhere Street

“The trio’s playing seems like intentionally angular swing, though it’s a unique rhythm pulse that can be fascinating and bewildering.” — Alex Martynov, All About Jazz
